The New iphone how do you like it? Its been out for a little while and I may get it. Like some info on what people are thinking about it and what the pros and cons.
I am on my 3rd Iphone and between the NDA restrictions on developers and the App store scrutiny I will be jumping ship to AndroidOS soon as the phones become available.
The user interface is above and beyond any UI on any mobile communications device I have ever used, and I've used many.
Even the first generation iPhone is still better than anything else on the market, in terms of usability.
What Apple has done with the iPhone is take the 80/20 rule and use it to their advantage. 80% of the people out there probably only use 20% of the capabilities of their mobile phones. Apple has made it a joy to perform those 20% functions on the iPhone. The other 20% of users like or require more functionality, more freedom, etc. Apple has only marginally addressed the needs of the high end 20% by providing an SDK and opening up the App Store.
At the same time, Apple is far to restrictive with what can and cannot be done on the iPhone. I mean, who's phone is it anyway?
I like lots of the applications on the App Store, and in fact and starting to work on one of my own. I love that I can load a VNC client on my iPhone and control my client's servers and computers from an outhouse in Botswana if I can get a signal!
I do not like Apple's relationship with AT&T.
I never thought that Apple would make a phone because I never thought that Apple would want to get into bed with the likes of AT&T or Verizon or Sprint, etc. The mobile phone companies in the United States are the epitome of bad service companies. Apple has always been about providing the best possible user experience, and with a mobile phone, there's a huge chunk of user experience they don't control.
I do not like the cost. I have a 700 minute plan, with unlimited text and data. With a few calls to 411, and GOVERNMENT TAXES, by bill is $175 this month. I freaking HATE AT&T. A damn text message should be 1/1000th of the price they charge.
I don't like the fact that AT&T precludes companies like Skype from creating a client for the iPhone.
There was a lot of hoopla about 3G problems with the iPhone. There were problems but they were awfully exaggerated. I believe the primary source of those complaints came from people who'd never used 3G phones before. The iPhone had issues but they were nowhere near as bad as the buzz on the Internet made them out to be.
Since the 2.1 patch, my phone has much better battery life and seems t be smarter about when to use 3G vs. Edge.
Like someone mentioned below, I'm looking forward to trying an Android based phone, but I'm starting to fear Google. I don't necessarily want Google to control every aspect of my Internet experience anymore than I want Microsoft to control ever computer out there.
I'm by no means a 'mac head' - in fact, it's the zeal that surrounds Apple that makes me treat their products with increased scrutiny.
That said: I've owned the new 3g iPhone for about a week and I love it! It works and works well. I have only two complaints: no flash support and no video recording.
Definitely a smart purchase and be-tee-dub, this post is from my iPhone!
i doubt you get that flash support before they allow other third party applications, too.
"i'm a pc," with linux. but i've watched mac go from old monochrome machines that i didn't like as much as the pc's of the same day running windows, to pretty nice machines running adapted nextstep/bsd that are a lot nicer than any pc running windows. for once in history, i can respect and relate to mac heads. but i don't want an iphone, or an ipod. not even a free one. (a free mac, i'll take that!)
