Who turns their computer off at night?

Do you turn off, sleep, or hibernate your computer at night?

Also, what's your longest uptime?

Personally, I leave my PC on sleep but occasionally restart/shut it down.
My longest uptime is probably 7 days.

I haven't turned my computer off since 1995--I'm actually running AOL 3.0 through this box. Other cool things I do: leave water running, refrigerator doors open, and I never tip waiters.

I just leave it on sleep mode when I'm not home! I just like to have it on for online games, messages that can't be dealt with on the phone or just having it on for the fun of it.

I always keep mine on. I think the only time I restart it is when I do an update. The reason?

Metal expands when it heats up and heats up when you send an electric current through it. When you shut it down, the current is removed, the metal cools and contracts. Similar to a sidewalk, after all that expansion and contraction, a sidewalk will eventually crack. Can you imagine what would happen to your computer if one of those metal circuit tracers cracked? Sure, it'd probably take a million times before it finally cracked, but why take the chance?

So, I leave mine on and just log off. Logging off resets the memory caches and when I log on again, it's like I turned it on for the first time.

Does this really apply for modern computers?

This is the first time I've heard it, but it does make sense.

Don't really think that's true. The only component that would die after being turned on and off so many times is the hard drive, and even that it would take a LOT of turning on and off.

Cases have fans in them for a reason, the components stay at a constant/almost constant temperature, and the metal used is Silicon, which can handle higher temperatures and would be less likely to break.

But hey, I'm pulling all of this out of my ass, so I could be wrong.

I don't Know about PC's but macs have an option in the system settings that allows you to set times where it will automatically shut off and turn back on. That way you don't have to worry about it and its on when you need it to be!

I don't know I think thats a pretty cool function.. but of course wouldn't really work for those downloading torrents.

if you have a steady download you can program your computer to shutdown after a certain time, even if you have a pc just have to go to run then imput shutdown.exe -f -t -s**** (i can't recall the exact sequence but its something like the one i put, i have no doubt in less than 24hours someone will post the correction) (*=seconds till shutdown)

Some bittorrent clients like uTorrent allow the option to sleep/hibernate/shutdown/restart once downloads are complete.

I can't remember the last time I turned my computer off...I mostly just leave it on and turn the moniter off.

The longest time I've been on AIM has been about 32 days, and even then, I just lost internet connection for a second, didn't actually turn my computer off.

Computer can be turned off? :D

My longest uptime is 65 days, without any restart or hibernating or anything :)
