Are we Multivac? (Level ii)

FUnetics Fanatics: We've come up with some great ideas so far. The amount of thought everyone's been putting into figuring this out is amazing. We've passed through Level i together. Let's continue to put our heads together and work through Level ii.

woke up with this thought regarding retcon:

this fits in with what I was getting at in my previous post (though further down the page \/ )

who knows what the original intent behind Multivac was. we may never find out. but we reclaimed the idea as our own and adapted our collective net philosophy accordingly. maybe Multivac was supposed to be the antagonist in this interactive mystery... but we latched onto the idea, and now...

WE ARE MULTIVAC!

not only that, but we've created meaning and purpose for ourselves. hooray!

Great job! I think it would make sense if they were leading us to the "new hacker's dictionary," right? It seems to fit the whole theme. I think the retcon entry has everything to do with this whole multivac storyline.

As far as the quine page goes, maybe that was multivac's mistake? A quine sounds interesting (self-replicating computer programs, like humans!), but pretty useless in actual practice. I spent some time looking at quine at wikipedia and various webpages... they sound like useless programs. More of a game than anything.

Maybe that's why it was his mistake?

okay, shifting the discussion over to this thread as we collectively prepare for the next level.

I've finally got a few concrete observations to share.

1) the new user named Multivac (note case-sensitivity).
I've been a (casual) member (viewer) for months now, adopting the name MULTIVAC (formerly/currently "Matt") as a symbolic gesture, but the fact that a new profile was created with the name Multivac on the day EP100 launched should be considered significant.
We've come a long way toward discovering (intuiting) the essence of this experience:
- We understand that we are the internet, and it is up to us to realize it's potential.
- The most exciting potential is it's ability to not only connect every individual on the planet, instantaneously, but
also provide us with seemingly infinitely evolving ways to learn and communicate information, which is
the future(or the key to the future), in a nutshell
- If the internet is the quintessential community, each sub-community is a microcosm.
|__ EpicFU is the owners manual for the internet., which means we own the internet
|__ EpicFU and MIX represent a new level of self-awareness as a conscious internet community, an
ongoing, evolving experiment: campfire discussions, active vs. passive participation quotients, etc.
|__ Each individual is the universe trying to understand itself, we are the internet trying to define itself, to
become the master of its own destiny
... so what I was trying to get at when I typed the "1)" earlier... the heading on Multivac's page says "System is as system does." regardless of the original intent at the outset of this experiment, we have already chosen, through our active participation, the direction we want to take this, which brings me to my next point....
2) "C.Y.O.A." - choose your own adventure.
3) though there have been changes made to the FUnetics site, there is still no level xiii

[i've been on the phone with an old-close now-faraway friend with some Great and Deep Questions Without Answers that have taken us hours now to explore and I've lost some trains of thought. I wanted to acknowledge the role of psychedelics as a tool for collective consciousness expansion, per one of vincent's early posts... and some other stuff... damn it's late now. all coherent thought is exhausted, as am I.]

anyway... masticate on that for awhile and let me know how it tastes. (c:

Matt, there's about a million and a half things that I want to say in response to this. Unfortunately I'm about to pass out behind the keyboard so I'll just say that that's brilliant for now. I have a feeling that this discussion will rake in well over three hundred brilliant responses and I can't wait to read them all and participate when I can.

I no longer think this is just a game. We are definitely doing something VERY important here.

Tell all your friends. Get them involved in this too. The more minds we have working on this the more effective our community will be. We are FUnetics Fanatics.

Matt, just to add on a bit: FUnetics is the owner's manual to the Internet, which we could very well be designing FUnetics right now. Good call there though. As well, wouldn't the individual be the ultimate microcosm, as per every old esoteric account of the Macro/Microcosmic relation? I think right now the Internet represents a very small fraction of what the individual Human is capable of. Remember, with the Macro/Microcosmic relationship I can infer that I am the Universe. What will the Internet be in 100 years, or beyond that even. Some people think this is dangerous to say but, with the Macro/Microcosmic relation in mind I can rightly say that I am God.

As Above, So Below.
or,
Ontology recapitulates phylogeny.

There's a model of the Universe that has the Individual (or individual's consciousness) as the narrow aperture, where the infinite exterior world is mirrored in the infinite expanse of one's consciousness.

I also believe that the deeper one goes into one's own consciousness, the closer you get to the "collective unconscious" or source and origin (repository, to use computer terms) of all consciousness.

In that respect, the net is like turning that funnel inside-out. as hardware gets smaller and smaller, and we're able to "store" more massive amounts of information in smaller physical spaces, the process becomes analogous to "expanding our collective consciousness" or making the insides of our heads bigger.

on top of all that, with simply an internet connection (your portable AC), you can access anyone or anything from anywhere. the key element in all of this is US. We are very much a part of the machine. The technology functions at our fingertips. And that is ultimately where our power and the power of the web augment and compliment each other. The net allows us to work together to solve common issues (or puzzles/mysteries) remotely.

Matt, I think this is the most accurate summation of what we think this is ultimately about. (at this point!)

I like it.

i just hope you as Vincent likes to put it FUnetic Fanatics don't start to over analyze what is in front of you. it is fun to follow leads to try and get insights, i assume the clues will escalate in difficulty but not to MIT Standards.

I don't think we can possibly over analyze anything right now. No matter where we go, we will easily be able to back track and arrive at any destination together. I think the most dangerous thing we could do right now is be afraid to go too far.
