Facebook?

So it seems like everyone i meet from the US wont use face book. Compared to Canada where you area social reject if you dont have one (ok...its not that bad)

I hear the CIA started it, is this just paranoid thinking? Seem like it could be true.

whatcha think?

O, to answer your question:

I don't know about the CIA, but it's definetly one big marketing scheme like air miles.

If I recall correctly,a Harvard alumn created the book of faces. I have one but only check it twice a week to keep up with all of the activities I'm involved in with school. I had no problem with it until they started allowing 40 year old creepers that have never attended campus for a single day join. It went from being a good place to keep in touch with friends/peers to a distraction in class to stalk complete strangers and find out who gives the best strip tease.

I am Canadian and I first used "Facebook" with peers for university class notes and campus networking.
It was cool because we could catch up on the information we needed when we didn't go to class, missed something and facebook made our study notes awesome because everyone posted and pooled in the informations to various classes.

Then all of a sudden i started getting added from grade school friends from long ago and people in my local community.....I was like oh okay....well...if I know you personally I will add you to Facebook.

Then Myspace people started adding me. I feel rude because I don't add them to keep things separated.
Social networking is becoming very bombarding and its nice to see people create these organizational friendfeed and iminta things......

I use myspace for my radio show and promoting things to Americans because most of my Detroit friends do not have facebook and will not use it.
I don't like either facebook or myspace they are addictive and they should only be used as a utility of sort,,,,,I time myself so I don't waste my time....cause it's such an easy thing to do.

It's tripped out...I feel bombarded by social networks.......I am not addicted but if I don't check my pages longer than a month I feel very bad....Like I'm some sort of bad friend or rude person. that's crazy.....
MyASS is right. Still it's hard to fight that feeling.
And as for the C.I.A creating facebook.....no it was created by university students.

I have a Facebook. But, it's invasive marketing is getting to be unnerving. Ever since they sold out to bigger corporations, both Facebook and MySpace have taken a turn for the annoying rather than fun.

But, both sites allow me to keep in touch with my friends/alumni.

My biggest problem with MySpace: it's become an advertising toilet. There are limits and MySpace has crossed that line. The second biggest is the violation of Net Neutrality. If I want to host a video, I want to use a hosting service of my choice. Instead, MySpace alters it's code and removes/renames the source links. It's unnerving.

Biggest problem with Facebook is the invasive marketing with it's applications. You can't add or use an app without being forced to spam your friends with invitations. And with so many apps, it's lost it's cleanliness. I posted my disappointment on my external blog. Not much more, but it's there if you're interested.

love facebook. hate the apps, and the constant invites. no means no people. but i have friends going to uni worldwide, as well as friends back home, so facebook is pretty awesome for keeping in touch, without having to necessarily do essay-long emails...

Why am I feeling Dejavu with this thread? I live in the US and everyone I know is on Facebook, well anyone in high school now or that started college 4 years ago or less. ANd now it will battle Google, Myspace, and others in their attempt to rule the social networking universe!

P.S I started my Facebook account back up again...It is really hard in todays word to not use a social networking site, "everyone is doing it." But seriously I don't use aim so without Facebook my social world is cut at the roots.

i despise myspace more than facebook, cause ive been around myspace since its development days. it really had its hayday back in '04 before fox bought them out the following year. at that time, layout sites werent really around, the bulletins and ads were less annoying.

what drives me up the wall the most is that fox backs up every new feature with a sleezy movie promo.

examples

the movie "300" = users can add up to 300 pics
"the eye" = users can change their homepage with pre-made layouts
"forgetting sarah marshall" = users can categorize their friends

i recently stopped using myspace, only to leave my page up for novelty purposes. my firefox extensions and greasemonkey scripts cant defeat the waves of mediocrity the users on there contribute. :/

i gave myself a 2 week run at facebook to see if i hang with it.

i stopped at day 5. :P

I think it's interesting that so many people complain about the applications on Facebook. You don't have to install all of them and if there are plenty you want to use, you don't have to make them all visible on your profile. In the edit application section, you also have the options to prevent them being mentioned in your mini-feed and the news feed on your homepage.

Facebook has also recently introduced a feature which hides some applications that are hardly used by people. That means it's much easier to navigate profiles.

As for advertising, I think that it's fairly subtle. Unlike MySpace, there isn't tons of obvious, flashy advertising on every page.
