Campfire: Has the Web Killed the Radio Star?

On this week's shows we saw an incredible radio station in KCRW -- they understand the web, technology, and social media. Is this the future for all radio? What else could it become? Or, is it dead?

I agree that the internet is a place where you'll find a lot of underground talent. . .like "the Mossy Mountain Band" for instance. But consider this: is it possible that there always was and always will be subterranean talents operating under the mainstream cheese? In the 1980's it was Iron Maiden, Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, AC/DC, DOKKEN, and Armored Saint vs. Tiffany, Menudo, and Madonna. In the late 80's to early 90's it was Slayer, Pantera, Guns 'n Roses, Nirvana, AC/DC (again), Aroma (with their self-titled debut album "Aromatic for the People" vs. the likes of Brittany Spears, J. Lo, and P. Diddy. Now, in present day, we still have some of the great artists around (albeit older) like Van Halen, who just went on tour with Eddie's son Wolfgang. Journey is back together with the original lineup. John Fogerty finally owns the rights to the old C.C.R. songs -- and he played some old Creedence at the Superbowl. The bottom line is, internet or not, the pseudo-artists will always be around to remind us of just how much we appreciate authentic music when we hear it. I mean, let's try to forget the "whisper song." What on earth was that all about? People bought that garbage.

Hey Paco, I'm just curious...what kind of software do you use for video editing? That sidebar that popped out at the start of your video was pretty pro-looking, and it's similar to what I'm wanting to do for future videos I make.

Radio will not die easily, but it will adapt like newspapers did when TV came out and when the web came out. There will probably be a lot of internet integration and innovation and all of that, but that's not a bad thing, and it won't kill radio.
If nothing else radio can provide free real-time requests and info while driving, something that mp3 players and satellite radio cannot do anytime soon.

Of course radio isn't dead! It never will be dead. Were computers dead when they came out with PDA's? Did the introduction of orbiting satellites kill AM and FM transmissions? Did cotton phase out wool or silk? Do imported mangoes kill the apple market? Were telephones dead when they came out with walkie-talkies? and then cell phones? No. There's always Magic Jack to save the traditional telephone -- and there's always something like a disseminated brain cancer scare to widdle down cell phone use. As media evolves, the old ways don't die -- they just take on new forms (kind of like energy). Today, that new form for radio is: internet (check out pandora.com) and SATELLITE (Sirius.com) radio. Almost everyone I know has satellite radio in their car. Internet and Satellite radio give the listener more control over what they hear. I still listen to traditional AM and FM when I become bored with listening to highly specialized stations without commercials. The great thing about Americans is that we love choices and versatility. There's never just one form of entertainment for us. We also love retro things. I can't tell you how many people I know who still enjoy listening to vinyl records on a turntable just because it's vintage. Radio will always be around. . . .and News Talk Radio is great! It's one of the open forums which prevent us from becoming Communists (and Hillary wanted to regulate it :(. . .shame on her!).

This is my first attempt at video responding or video blogging. I thought I'd Record this using the front Facing camera of my HTC TYTN II, (or tilt as it's otherwise known) I hope I can be fully heard and understood as it did capture a lot of background noise as I was taking a walk around where I live in Aberdeen.

THe following are links to stations and programs I talked about in that video.

BBC 6 music: http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/
as well as the Bruce Dickinson rock show: http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/shows/bruce_dickinson/

in terms of the non-musical content I talked about, first up was the station BBC7
http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/

also in terms of other shows I mentioned, we have the now show (very british satirical take on news and current affairs) just started a new run on friday:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/comedy/nowshow.shtml

I also talked about the post wartime comedy, the goon show. I forgot to mention that that this was the birthplace of modern British situational comedy, rowan atkinson They have inspired many icons of British comedy, Monty python included.

also "old harry's game"

Also the DAB Radio that I absolutely love, The bug:

Hope this provides a good inclusion to the discussion, as I hope it would give a good insight into what we have going over here. :)

I appreciate radio. It's really how I find my new music. Because of the vastness of the internet and the billions of artists screaming to be seen and recognized across every social network, I feel overwhelmed to listen to it all. I just barely made it through the entire SXSW collection featured in an earlier episode and sadly, of the 800 or so songs available, I only found about 20 I actually liked. Radio DJ's have a hard job separating the good from the bad, just the monotony of it all would agrivate me.

Mother always said I was "One-in-a-Million", which means there are almost 7,000 people in the world exactly like me (based on the most world population cencus and clocks). And because marketing suggests: if one person voices an opinion, there are 100 more who aren't but feel the same way. So, there are at least 707,000 people who still feel radio is a necessity. I think that's enough to keep it around for a while longer.

I am a little confused by your math. If My mom told me i was 'one in a million' well, besides that she is totally incorrect genetically speaking (as we each have unique DNA) - lets ignore the facts for now and assume that you are one in a million - as there are 6,602,224,175 people alive as of (July 1st) and breathing at this particular moment then;

6,602,224,175 is 6.7 billion - well, that means there are 6200 people like you. Not sure what Marketing study you site, or how they would derive some calculation that would somehow provide the metric as "agree with you" vs "we still want radio" - or if any such metric is of any use without the 'we want radio because we want free music" - many (most?) people on this planet want radio so they can listen to the news.

I think you guys are onto something with your objective analytics. First, we need to clarify what Epic Fu meant by "radio" in the question. Are we talking about radio frequency in general? Do we mean music or talk transmitted over FM or AM? . . .or does High Frequency (HF) radio count? Microwaves are even a form of radio frequency. As long as we use microwave ovens, radio will be around. Long live radio!
