I've recorded an album in Garageband - let me know what you think!

Hi everyone on Mix, just a quick forum note to say - my band 'Yesterday Was Mine' has recorded an album in Garageband! and the best thing of alll is it is freeeeeee for all. The quality isn't amazing, but we were able to input directly the guitar\bass ...record the singing\drums with the internal mic on my Mac - and feel pretty happy with the end result!

It's the most incredible thing these days is, being able to write, record and publish music to the web, with no greedy record companies involved.

Anyhoo ... with the price of gas, food (and fun?) rising it seems - it's nice to get something for free (who says there is no such thing as a free lunch, breaky, elevensies, morning tea, brunch, afternoon tea, pudding, supper, dessert or midnight snacks?) :D

Enough rambling, if anyone wants a copy or a listen - then download it here for iTunes format, or follow the ilike link on the page to hear it online.
It has a Rock\Pop feel! 11 tracks - (All recorded in garageband except for track 5 which we did at a demo studio)

Congratulations on the Album. I'm just hearing it on-line. Will download the whole album next! I really think it's important that more bands create their own content and realize that the internet is a powerful distribution method that takes away all the need for record companies.

Congratulations again and keep rockin'!

Thanks man! We appreciate you taking time out to hear it!! The internet really is an amazing platform to be able to put you own creations out there without having to worry about a record company or other third party changing or watering things down just to make a quick buck! Long live the interweb!! Thanks again!

nice work, stunned/amazed at the quality considering what you used to record it. Im not entirely sure if you had it mastered but if you like i can run it through my TLA eq and compressor and clean it up a bit.

Glad ya liked it !! haha you'd laugh at how we 'mastered' it - in the end once i had all the tracks output from Garageband - I burnt it to a CD using the sound check feature in iTunes - which I think roughly gets them all to be the same volume, then re-imported them into iTunes :D So its all been pretty low tech - if you get a spare moment, I'd be curious to see what the end result would be through your setup. No pressure tho, thanks for having a listen!

send me a message later in the week and i'll have a go at it. The rig I have is worth about 30k AUS so i'm pretty sure i can clean it up a bit. The other option would be send me the parts and i'll redo the mix down and then run it through tubes. There was a track in I though would be fun to remix but i can't remember it now

Great stuff - my fav is One More Try. - oh, that one is track 5.

I like mystery novel too. Please do share the production details!

Thanks Mike! cool ya had some favs on there already! - and thanks for the picture!!

The production was pretty fun, we basically recorded it all in my bedroom - set up the drum kit and my bro Steve played and we recorded it through the internal mic. Then I recorded the bass, just using one of those 1/4 jack to 1/8 jack inch converters to put it into audio in on the mac, then Adam did the same for guitar. Then I did the singing with the internal mic! ... it took us about eight months recording mostly in the weekends and sometimes during the week too!

'One More Try' was the only track we spent some dough on with demo studio time in 2006. Other than that the album in its entirety didn't cost us a bean ! Anyhow I'll stop waffling on =D - thanks again for the feedback, it's much appreciated!

Drum kit was - analog (with microphones placed here and there) then connected to a mixer to pass to the port for Microphone in ? _ or was this some Midi like drum kit that you plugged into the Mac ?

Did Adam use the effects in Garage Band or did he pass it through some effect boxes/pedals ?

My son Eric Jahn is lead screamer for Mortifere - and step son Michael Fister is the drummer for Cosio.

looks nice there in iTunes, 'eh ? (right click (oops, you are on a Mac, so option click) on the screen capture to see it in its full wonderful glory !

Hey again Mike! another cool pic, thanks!
For the drums we actually just used the built in internal mic on the mac, and then put an effect on the drum layer in Garageband. I think 'thickened drums' was the main one we used. Only prob with the internal mic was that it did pick up unwanted sound sometimes, but generally it worked out well. We did the same thing for the singing, but just changed the input level for each so that it wasn't clipping when recording.

Adam used the effects in Garageband for the guitar, and I did the same with the bass. Straight into good ol' G.B ... I think it worked a bit easier for bass - as guitar we had to make a few layers of guitar with different sounds to cut through.

Just checked out Erics band, coool!! Looks like they had a good review on there myspace page, and Michaels band sounded good two - two polar opposites sound types weren't they :D great stuff!!

Have a good rest o' ya Sunday!! YWM appreciates you getting the album!!
