On the subject of voyeurism, from Wikipedia:
"Voyeurism is the sexual interest in spying on people engaged in intimate behaviors, such as undressing, sexual activity, or urinating. It is classified as a paraphilia in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association. The diagnosis would not be given to people who experience typical sexual arousal simply by seeing nudity or sexual activity; the aspect of spying is central to paraphilic voyeurism. The word derives from French verb voir (to see) with the -eur suffix that translates as -er in English. A literal translation would then be “seer” or "observer", with pejorative connotations.
Also, the word voyeur can define someone who receives enjoyment from witnessing other people's suffering or misfortune.
"

So every time we lurk on someone's profile, watch that video of the skateboarding accident, or even watch porn, we are participating in voyeurism, and that's okay. Internet culture just so happens to encourage both exhibitionism and voyeurism, which I guess is an unintended but well exploited by-product of the medium.

While this is an older discussion, I will say that I'm strung out web, css, xhtml, mac os, w3c, qik and more. My name is David and I'm an internet junkie.

Wow, what an interesting thread! How did the internet change my life? Well, I've met new people through Stickam and BlogTv and there are some pretty interesting people out there! The internet has also changed me a bit because when it comes to communications, I was no longer shy to talk to people! I was just myself and if people didn't like it, there are 2 billion more people on the web that would find some interest towards me!

Also, the internet has changed my life when I find sites with a community! I can find people with the same interest and also, I can find people to argue with if there is an argument!

If the internet wasn't here now, I would probably have to go through the same thing everyday in public!

Internet = BIGGER COMMUNITY!

I recently couldn't find something on the Internet and it blew my mind. There is so much free information that it is sometimes jarring when you can't find what you are looking for.

If anyone can find a site with pics for "French naval officers uniforms during the 1720s", please let me know.

My experience is not different than the rest of the forum-goers. I've discovered new media and talked with many people from all over the world.

I'm a true child of the second internets (what many consider to be web 1.0, or the age of HTML, and other pompus terms to describe it). I started out on AOL 3, and eventually moved over to a pure PPP connection to Prodigy. It was clunky and slow, but at the time it got the job done.

What I remember about that time was the novelty of the whole affair, not just of the end user side, but on the provider side. Everyone was trying everything imaginable! We could get our music, our proggies (FateX 3 anyone?...I was 12 for god's sake!), even our groceries online. It was pioneering without that pesky threat of death by any number of horrible diseases. One might dare say it was magical.

So, now, being a young 24 year old, I miss some of the magic of those days. Thanks to the relative ease at which old data is stored, I can have a nostalgia trip just through a quick download of Windows 3.1 and VirtualBox. I've got a couple of VMs, one for Windows 3.1, one for OS/2 Warp 4, One for XP, and maybe some others for more obscure stuff.

The internets have, perhaps paradoxically, turned me into a nostalgia buff.
