my mom is like that too, everything is turned off at night, except for a night-lite everything else is turned off. We are a very energy conscious family. I'm like that too I don't like leaving things turned on if I'm not using them, I think the longest uptime was two days because I was downloading a couple things

I've heard the energy required to reboot is actually more than leaving it in low-power mode at night. Dunno if it's true...

yeah I've heard that too, I think it is true actually, I turned it off because I really don't use it everyday, I can go up to three or four days without using it so I don't see the point of leaving it on all the time

It'll depend a lot on the spec of the machine and the power supply.
I'd imagine laptops use far less energy than desktops, generally.

Windows only uses about 2.3 watts when asleep, so I think its still environmentally friendly to just leave the computer on sleep all the time.

I turn it off since my computer's fan is noisy and I can't sleep. even if I had a silent computer I would turn it off since everything I need it to do is while day time (even lengthy downloads). I don't Hibernate since it doesn't save energy and isn't useful to me because my computer is workable after after 1 minute of booting time.

Longest uptime I guess was 6 days (it was a long time ago)...

I guess it just depends on the user and OS. Personally, since I constantly use my PC (sometimes even in the middle of the night), I just put it to sleep all the time although it inevitably has to restart/shutdown because of updates.

However, there is this new Restart Manager Vista supposedly plans on adding with the upcoming Service Pack... new restart manager=less restarts=longers uptimes.

My laptop is on all the time. Probably not the best for the lifespan of my lappy but when I come home from work it's nice to plop down on my bed and check my email and social websites.

My desktop currently has no internet on it because I haven't had a chance to run the CAT5 to my room yet, but it's mostly just for video editing so it gets turned off a lot. However, it'll probably be on all the time when I run my CAT5 because it's got a huge drive, perfect for torrenting!

Turn my pc off every night, and day if i'm not using it, coz whats the point it being on if its not doing anything and nobody using it???

Well if you're a geek then there can be many reasons - downloads, encoding video/audio, distributed computing apps like folding@home or SETI@Home, to name but a few reasons.

My comp is on 24/7. I restarted it yesterday, because I installed some virtual CD prog that required me to. But I never turn it off. Reasons:
1. I dont care about power save, since I will be ripped off by the e.d. company at the end of the month anyways
2. I use torrent, and I love to leave my comp on so that other people may dl from me things I already dl-ed
3. Very often I connect to my home computer from work, so I can check mails, play quick game or so :D

Now I think my longest uptime was about a month, but I am not really sure =)
