All public space is a place for us all to express ourselves..the streets belong to the people and is a medium. As far as the graff community..its always gonna be underground, but1sure way to cutbak on bombing IS to make it legal. )ART!..its wat makes the world go round

What is it with people not understanding that a building is someone's PERSONAL property however?

it depends- my usual answer.

*its a way to express yourself, and communicate. something to work on, something to do...
people like to see it and who wouldn't want to put it up if iys fun and you have talent. unless you really suck at it. then i really feel it shouldn't be up there if it's not good.

*on the legal issue... if it's some ones house, ill be kinda mad, but the goverment, i could care less.

Technically, obviously it is a crime as it happens. And should continue to be if it has any racial remarks or something derogatory.

From an artistic perspective though, I don't mind Graffiti and wish all those who are talented in it to continue doing it. Just don't make it offensive in the way of racial remarks and whatnot. The first two examples you gave are great examples of the artistic talent of some graffiti artists. The third, though it was good, I tend to favor the mural type ones.

So anyway.... I don't mind it and really just worry about certain remarks that can be found in it that I would hope most people would deem way too offensive.

i think all graffiti is illegal if you make it without permission of the property regardless to the message and stuff. yet again, if its the only way to be heard, than i dont mind resorting for something illegal XD its still art

to me graffiti is art i like to see them and sometimes do them but as much art as it is it is a crime because it is vandalism if there is no consent

well we all gotta remember graffiti is the art of a culture, every culture has it's music (rap) it's dance (breakin) it's art (graffiti) and so on...the culture is HIP-HOP, so to finally answer the question, Graffiti isnt a crime unless your a toy or the cops catch you.. FreE seWp!!

graff is a art form, but there is a line if it is legal or not ..i done it all in this graff game, but now that i own a house i would go crazy if some little kid came and drop a full on my house..but in time as i got older i saw the world in a way that i wouldn't do half the stuff i did be for when i was a teen ...all graff is art in my eyes from the hand tag's 2 big full .. there's a way 2 do it and if u love graff then u see the art that we make

i think the location of the graffiti is important in questioning whether its legal or not. i think its ALL art, and i really loived going to london and new york and seeing the longass graffitis on the wall. i agree with KellyAnne as well that if the content is anti-_____, then its no fun.
those are my two cents

I think it depends on the artist's intention, if they were just intending for it to cause a ruckus at the police station. If one is doing it for the sake of art's sake or for any other creative reason then it's art.
Art is just an expressive act that connects with other people, and stimulates and appeals to the senses.
It is legally a crime, but in the end, it's art.

Out of everywhere I've been, one Place where The argument for Graffiti as art gains a strong advantage is Berlin, Germany. Given everything the City has went through from the Mid-late 20th Century, I can excuse the city for being painted up to the nines. But some of the artwork there is just unbelievably good.

These were a few photos that I took in a place called Kultalternative, a place that (now) combines all of the following: a bar: a cafe: an open air cinema: a concert venue: a grain tower turned climbing wall, and a skate park. this was a former railway depo next to the Warschauer Strasse Station

But one thing struck me about all this good Graffiti art, is that they most likely had one variable that many other artists didn't have, Time!! Mainly because of the oppressive politics of the east German/soviet rule at the time, and the many then derelict structures of post WWII (not to mantion meny sub-standard ones being built soo after) providing many blank canvases. The wall itself being a particularly relevant one. It is unlikely that the majority of it came out of gang culture, not as much as say, in the US or more recently, the UK.

Personally, from what I saw in Berlin, that's the kinda Graffiti i like. What I don't like is the kind of single-color squiggle or tag that just looks an illegible mess!! To me, if there has been some effort put into such "defacing", then I'm, more likely to appreciate it.

I think people need to use common sence about WHERE they do it. Sometimes beautiful buildings or monuments can be destroyed with badly spelt slogans or names. I think it can be defined as art when they put a bit of thought into where no one minds them doing there stuff, under roads, along train tracks and places otherwise grey and bland that are rarely seen by most people are fine when its skilled grafitti full of colour and shapes.
Also people need to realise when their just plain bad and making a mess. I paper my bedroom wall with newspaper and practise on that...
