people are always gonna say anytime you smoke youre effecting your health but i dont think any time is to late to stop. I'm a smoker and I'm not even up to quiting yet. At least your trying. Just talk to your doctor.

Smoking is retarded. I understand enjoying a cigar or a nice drink every once in a while but sucking on a social cancer stick. I'm for rizzel that complaining kids that smoke do it purely for social reasons. WTF is that?

health wise, after 8 years of not smoking, you will have lungs that are more or less as healthy as a non smoker.
Smoking regularly for longer than a month will start to have a marked affect on you, but the longer you smoke the worse it will be (obviously)
its always worth giving up, because your lungs can repair themselves if given the chance
dont give up giving up, i promise you it will be worth it in the end!!

Dude.... it starts effecting your health as soon as you start smoking. It takes like 18 years for the damage to be undone and that's only if you haven't smoked for that long.

I told my gf that she needed to stop smoking or FOFL (Fuck Off For Life, just made it up). My Dad stopped smoking for like 10 years then started up again and BAM heart attack and triple bypass WOOOHOO!!! HAPPY Christmas!

idk , rly. i can go to a party and smoke a pack in a night. i smoke anywhere between a pack or two a week, if i feel fancy, one sort of expensive pouch a week. er ..if anybody has ever rolled smokes you know a pouch can last a whiile. i also ride a bike. i cycle sixty mile weeks and twenty mile weekends. idk abt serious health risks or ppl that say it makes you asthmatic but i def. dont have those problems at all... yet.
im sure smoking is dangerous, but living is dangerous. plus, im rly fond of "the romance of the cigarette." a friend and i said. its like a whole different level of thought the smoker has. she was saying that sits a bit of zen. not many ppl take seven minutes breaks out of their lives to just breathe.

The great thing about quiting smoking is that your longs can heal back. It may take a few years, but they will heal back. Now remember this, only 15 percent of people who smoke get cancer. It only increases your risk. Now think that you have a 9 percent chance of getting cancer if you live in a big city like Atlanta or Boston. Imagine what New York and L.A. are like. No matter which way you look at it though, quitting smoking is a good decision. Cheers to you.

I gave up smoking just over six months ago. I went from 25-30 a day to 0 overnight and I can tell you it was not easy. In fact i wasn't really intending to give up. Although my wife & I had agreed we would (it was my birthday), we had said this numerous times before and never gone through with it and to be honest I didn't want to in the past. I got through the first 24 hours fine and at that point thought I would see how long I could last before I had one. As it turned out six months and counting! The key points are 3 days (if you can get through that you can actually start to think of things other than smoking), 3 months (by which point you should be pretty much living without thinking about cigarettes, except for you old triggers, such as seeing people smoke on tv or after food for me) and (they say) 3 years (not got there yet so don't know about that one!) Each of these points represents a real temptation to start again (look - I have stopped thinking about smoking, so I beat the addiction, so one more won't hurt now right?)

As to health effects, I was always told that the human body has a huge capacity to repair itself but that this gets less effective with age. So if you set aside the big diseases (cancer, emphasima, etc) then the younger you give up the less permanent damage you do. Some approximations for you - give up before you are 21 and there should be no lasting impact on your health (so long, as I said, you don't get a specific condition), give up before 25 and you will be roughly 95% of non-smoker, by thirty about 90% (or that's what I tell myself), after that it drops off pretty sharply. Although I blame the tobacco companies. All this time and they still have made it safer? At the end of the day if the health effects were less, or they would just go and find that cure for cancer - I would still be smoking.

It's nice that you've decided to stop smoking. You're adding a "positive factor" to this world by reducing second hand smoke and changing your life as well. To answer your question: You've already affected your health but that doesn't mean you can't change it. You can use this and warn others before they start smoking.
(Don't mean to sound negative but the truth can be harsh and disturbing)
