Do Vegans/Vegetarians realize plants are alive just like animals are alive?

in my experience, it doesn't seem like it.

Ahhh! Oops my bad lol, I fully knew that ah ha ha, Idk what was going through my head when I put that. I meant to say that out of the 20 standard amino acids, 8 of them are essential, bahhh, my bad, my bad there. And is there 9? My bio textbook tells me there are only 8. I don't trust Wiki much though, but my bio textbook is kinda out of date so idk. My bad >.<
And I know what amino acids are lol, I was referring to the point you made after the list that you made. I am a bio student. Perhaps I should've been clearer when mentioning that.

I have been reading this and i would just like to say that all of you people are hypocrites.

Jordan, if you were just trying to get insight then you wouldn't be arguing with every who poster here.

But on the topic: i believe that plants do have feelings just like any other organism. They evolved just like us, so i don't doubt that they feel something. But, the fact is that, the world runs by one simple rule: "Survival of the Smartest." Not to say that plants are smart, but if they can't move and they have no defense to being eaten then they were obviously made to be eaten. Animals fall under this category too. The reason we eat animals is because we have the ability to, were smarter than them. Regardless of how they scream and moan when they are killed doesn't make any difference, if they weren't made to be eaten then they wouldn't be so easy to be domesticated and slaughtered, would they?

Now, on to the subject of they way meat is processed. Yah, they pump things into the meat to meet a quota, but they do the same thing with plants. They cover them with pesticides and germicides and any other -cides you can think of, so that the plants don't die. And have you ever heard of GM foods. They infuse scorpion DNA in the stuff. Its nothing different than with animals.

I'm not into the nutritional fact-- but, the thing is, I don't want to be a pill popper for the rest of my life cause I don't eat meat. Yah, eating meat may lead to heart disease and high cholesterol but you need those in order to grow, sans the heart disease.

The reason I eat meat is because its OK with my religion. The bible says at one time god said we had to eat meat so I'm cool with it. I know meat conflicts with some people religion, and i respect that, but if its OK with mime, then its cool with me.

I truly think that vegetarianism is stupid, because everything dies the same: humans, animals, plants -- i don't really get how you thought they would die. And veganism is just ignorant in my opinion. But the thing is we live in a country where we can have the luxury not to eat meat. Its that simple. People in America and in other 1st world countries or so well off they can live with out meat, does it mean were better evolved, no. does it mean that we are superior to everything else, no. but i think that its just our social, economic, and health care standings that allow us to have vegans and vegetarians, for whatever reason they might be such.

i don't mean to bash vegetarians and vegans its just i think that everything that has a life has the right to live and no ones is greater than another. but the thing it is survival and if you must kill then kill but only what you need.

oh and just in case this question comes up: no i don't think it cool to kill humans but that is because its a internal species thing lions don't think its cool to kill other lions and they don't because its their own species. it sort of gives you an unspoken bond that you don't want to break. plus the bible says its bad. (^-^)

You say good arguments and statements, and I have to say, I think that its stupid and selfish for people to eat meat when they don't have to. You just said, kill, but only what you need. Here in North America, we don't need to eat meat to survive, that's what I've been trying to get at. Sure, it's not the same as eating 'meat', but you can live perfectly healthy lifestyles by being vegetarians! I come from a line of people going back THOUSANDS of years who never touched meat! Through the ages, we've learned to adapt and come up with alternative ways of getting our protein, so saying that you're not getting vitamins and minerals and the such by not eating meat, you're wrong.

The reason I never brought up religion was because it is redundant. Bringing up religion into this argument would mean that personal opinions on very touchy matters would be brought up. Though since you did, I thought I might as well too, to get my point across. I'm a Hindu. My Mahabharata says eating meat isn't wrong, but it should only be eaten when it is absolutely neccessary for survival. Do we need to eat meat to survive right now? No. Do we need to eat plants to survive if we're not gunna eat meat? Yes. You can have a full and healthy lifestyle eating just plants, you can't have one eating just animals. I guess religion does play a part in it all, but I know people who are Hindu and they completely disregard that. I also know Christians who are vegetarian. It's a personal choice, being vegetarian or not.

Being a vegetarian has nothing to do with evolution, it is a choice. I agree, humans were born to be omnivores. Though we NOW live in a society where we do not need to kill needlessly, and we can reduce the killing by a tenfold. Sure, I'm killing plants, but I need them to survive, like I said before, I do not need to kill animals to survive.

Gosh.

Im sorry but this is getting on my nerves: You are using redundant wrong.

to kill without excess does not mean to only kill plants, to kill without excess means kill only what you need, of plants and animals. yes we can live off of plants only but you can also live off of meat only too. And just like eating only plants, you'll be popping pills in order to stay healthy. to value food, weather it vegetable or animal, over another is stupid, its just food, no matter were it comes from.

All I'm trying to saying is that vegetarianism is a choice/luxury that can be sustained by the culture in which we live, people will be vegetarian for what ever reason they want to believe in and I'm not saying its wrong its just to argue about something that isn't even that important is.

I dont know if your trying to prove a point or trying to convert people to vegetarianism but i think your not getting the point of the conversation. its point is to give an understand as to why people are vegetarian and what it seems to me is that you are trying to do is convert us to herbivores. Im sorry if i misunderstand but that how it seems.

and religion is not a stupid thing to bring in because its a prime factor into the conversation. some people are vegetarians because of their religion. and my point was not to say that all Christians are omnivores but to say that we have the option to be.

You are no one to tell me what I would or wouldn't do with regards to trying to gain insight.

Not that I have to justify my methods to you at all, but think about the following:

1)Asking hard questions and making responses to the answers are two of the best ways to get people to elaborate
2)Arguing with someone is, in my opinion, the BEST way to find out where a person REALLY stands on an issue, not just where they say they stand.

I'm sorry but it didn't seem like you were just trying to see what people really thought, but try to tell them they were wrong. which i don't think you have the right to do.

So, Let's assume for the sake of argument that I was trying to tell someone that they were wrong, and see how that shows the flaws in your previous statement.

Then, You would have just told me that I was wrong for telling someone else that they were wrong. If I had no right to tell someone that I think they're wrong, then you would also have no right to tell me that you think I was wrong.

Luckily, I do have the right to tell anyone that they are wrong, and as such everyone else also has that right.

Anyone has a right to say to anyone whatever the hell they want to say to them-A Principle you just applied in telling me your opinion on my words.

Actually, I'm with Alex on this one. This whole discussion is based on opinion, sooo you really can't tell anybody that their opinion on something is wrong, it's a personal thing persay, in doing so, you're completely disrespecting that individual's character. Judge and be judged. I see we're getting really off topic here.

*Nods* I agree.
Everyone is pushy in this topic in regards to their own beliefs. For the most part rather than discussing, there's a lot of accusing and finger pointing.

Arguing is a natural way of how discussions like these progress. We just need to focus and not take anything personally right everyone?

Being misinformed or ignorant is not the same as being an idiot either. I really think that Jordan has brought up some good points and seems to have been the most calm in this discussion. So we should really stick to answering questions rather than this finger pointing, angry BS. A'ight?

Sorry in advance: Lol @ "the bible says it's bad" A funny way of saying it. And animals of the same species DO kill eachother, but not because they are cannibals (well some are, ex. Black Widow), but for territory and women. (hehe.)

my dad has a saying that plants are people too.....

it makes sense.... plants are living things. They eat, grow and do live. They do get treated bad too, like mix pollination and abnormal growing conditions. Plants fight to live too.

it makes sense...
